Australia Go Through!

A thrilling 2:2 draw with Croatia means that Australia are through to the Semi-Finals in second place behind Brazil (for our group).

Here is a shot of Kewell's magic equaliser in the 79th minute:

Croatian goal-keeper espies his doom:

Some well-deserved joy:

Kewell getting religious (and rightly so, sport is Australia's national religion, after all):

Great game, but what crazy bedlam at the end! Red cards being handed out left and right, confusion all round as the ref forgets that he is supposed to send Simunic off, even after he gets his third yellow card for the match (he finally got the red after full-time whistle). A late goal by Cahill is disallowed, no one is sure why (a bit of an anti-climax to the game actually). Offsides that weren't (and were). Handballs that were. Missed chances. Aussie goal keeper lets the ball roll right over him (git). Blatant and Ballsy fouls. Too much shirt pulling. Hissy fits and eff-yous from the Croatian captain. A Croatian (Simunic again) tries to physically stop the ref from blowing his whistle (and isn't sent off). Lots of (almost vomit-inducing) tension. Arm-chair sportsmen. Lot's of "If that was me, I would have..." from the Gio. A fantastic game!

We got what we came for, and today, it feels like anything could be possible. Next up: Australia v. Italy. Hopefully the Italians will consider this game a little more worthwhile from an "artistic" point of view and actually try to beat us (unlike their performance against the US).

Huzzay for Ghana too!

My vote for man of the match goes to the Croatian coach, for keeping us all entertained with poses like this:

i'm eating my hat as i type .. incredible multitasking. i am actually truly happy for you, and totally stunned that you made it through to the final 16.

i forbid you to get further in this competition than england, as that would leave us with only one international "sport" that we can truly be better at .. snooker.

i can't quite believe it, but celebrate with you.
